When King was 17 and working as a camp counselor, she met 19-year-old exchange counselor Topher King from Ireland. The two wrote letters to each other for the five years they were apart. They married in 1992. After attending a state school for a semester and a half, she transferred to the Art Institute of Philadelphia, where she graduated with a degree in photography. She then moved to Ireland landing in Dublin first for two years, then to Tipperary, Ireland where she and Topher renovated a farm and she later worked with adult literacy students. While in Dublin, before she could obtain a work permit, she read a book a day, often classics she thought would have read if she studied writing, including "a lot of surrealist fiction." She began writing novels while in Dublin. She returned to Pennsylvania in 2004, where she lives with her husband and children
