"True works of art outlive the fashions of their time. Our love for them lasts throughout our lives. Ever since my youth I have been able to look at Michelangelo's "Creation of Man", at the "Battle of the Greeks and the Amazons" from the famous Scopas frieze, or at "La Marseillaise" by Francois Rude again and again, and every time as if for the first time. I have also been attracted, more than once, by the painters "in vogue", but became indifferent to them as soon as I tried to imitate their light manner. Life has taught me to remember that real art is created through human suffering and joy, and that one cannot simply borrow the style of another artist or period. One can be proud of great works of art, one can love them, but any imitation of them is vain and meaningless. One can train oneself to do things that one wouldn't ordinarily dream of doing, but that doesn't necessarily make one any happier. This is why I consider sincerity to be the very foundation of art. In this lies the human justification for art. This sincerity means, first and foremost, the ability to express the ideals of one's own time. The grandiose passion of Michelangelo, the majestic profundity of Poussin, the penetrating clarity of Vermeer, and the melancholy of Perov's "Village Funeral" have remained for ever as symbols of their time. Fortunate indeed is the artist who has found images that can help his art survive through the ages as a sign of his own time".
