`Framley Parsonage` is the fourth of Trollope`s six Barsetshire novels, and clearly the author had fallen in love with `the dear county`. Though many people think first of Barchester Towers or The Last Chronicle of Barset when considering the canon, `Framley Parsonage` contains much of the light-heartedness of the one and some of the tragedy of the other. The plot concerns Mark Robarts, a young clergyman, whose school and university friendship with Lord Lufton and his wife`s friendship with Lady Lufton, the young lord`s mother, cause him to be presented with the valuable living of Framley at an age when most clergymen are still curates. Mark is a good and honourable pastor, but if he has a fault it is that of ambition for higher ecclesiastical preferment. This leads him to unwise socialising with influential politicians, to the dismay of his patroness, Lady Lufton, and eventually to imminent ruin. Meanwhile, his younger sister Lucy and Lord Lufton have fallen in love, again in opposition to Lady Lufton`swishes, and their love affair is played out against the background of social and political intrigue.
