Murder suspects abound: dashing but penniless Captain Wyeth, Ann Phelps' recently returned suitor, who quarreled with her father just before he was killed; Basil Thistlewood, a rival collector of curiosities, who cheated Phelps; and Dr. Douglas Sterling, a physician who visited Phelps the morning of his death. But when Sebastian learns of a connection between Phelps and his arch nemesis Lord Oliphant, a former military officer who spearheaded a mass murder during Sebastian's war years on the Peninsula that still haunts him, Sebastian begins to fear for the safety of his wife, Hero, and their newborn son.
